Book Bags

January 29th, 2010

January 28, 2010

Dear parents/guardians,

I am close to completing the reading assessments used for determining your child’s independent reading level (this is the level where a text is relatively easy for the child to read on their own, approx.  95% success or only 1 in 20 words being difficult to read).  Once I have assessed all students and compiled Guided Reading groups I will begin sending home book bags.  In these book bags you will find 2-3 books at your child’s independent reading level and 1 book at their instructional level (these texts are challenging yet manageable for an emerging reader, 90% success rate with approx. 1 in 10 words being challenging).  During your designated reading time, have your child read the books to you.  Try not to interject unless she/he becomes frustrated or appeals to you for help.    You may include these texts as a part of your required reading for the homework packet.  Along with the books you may also find supplementary materials such as flashcards, games, and or worksheets.  Instructions for all additional activities are included in the book bag and are directly linked to either a 1) key element we are working on in class, 2) related to the texts in the book bag, or 3) meant to assist your child within a specific area of need.  Book bags go home at the beginning of the week and are to be returned no later than Friday of that same week.  I will be meeting with each student to work on the skills necessary to help them reach the next reading level.  With your help your child will become a successful independent reader in no time.  Thank you for your support.  If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me, send a note in your child’s folder or speak with me in person before or after school.

February Celebrations

January 29th, 2010

Dear parents/guardians,

Our class is very close to earning all of our marbles which means we get to have a celebration!   Our Room Moms, Lisa & Sherry, and I are putting together some fun crafts and yummy treats for our class on Thursday February 11th, the day before our 4-day Presidents’ weekend.  While this is not a Valentine’s Day party we will have time at the end of the day to pass out Valentine’s cards if children wish to bring them.  This is where I need your help, while it is fun to personalize Valentine’s with each classmates name it is very difficult for Kinders to distribute them if they can’t read the names on the cards.  If your child would like to participate in the card exchange please make sure to send 24 Valentine’s with only your child’s name in the “From” area, leave the “To” area BLANK.   I will not be sending home a class list.  It is much easier and less time consuming to distribute cards this way, and on a minimum day (esp. before a 4-day weekend) we need to be very cautious about time.  Lisa and Sherry will be contacting you soon with more information about volunteering on this day and for our 100th Day Celebration on February 25th.  Thank you for your cooperation, our class is looking forward to celebrating our big accomplishment!

Dear parents/guardians/family members,

Monday

We started read short CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words together.

Wednesday

We finished Chapter 4 in Math.

Thursday

We welcomed prospective Bay Park parents as they toured our Kindergarten classrooms.

Friday

Mrs. Corder came in to do art with us.  We are learning to draw lions!
